WESTLOCK — The Westlock Library has unveiled its new, five-year strategic plan of service.

Those details and other information was shared with Westlock and area residents during an open house April 18, that included family activities, demonstrations, and showcasing some new technology.

Library staff, including those from locations in Jarvie and Fawcett, welcomed residents and visitors to the two-hour event.

New library director Michelle Albrecht, who began in December, said the open house provided an opportunity for people to “learn more about what the library offers.”

“We also have some new technology we’re showcasing. We have a new self-checkout machine that we’re demonstrating, and we have our new 3D printer as well,” said Albrecht, noting a silent auction by ‘Friends of the Library’ was also raising funds for the library.

Library board chairperson Kathy Kieser said that after a year in the making, they were excited to present the library’s five-year strategic plan of service, which runs from 2024 to 2028. Kieser highlighted some of the new technology, which also included a new inventory control and tracking security system.

“It adds some protection to the collection and what it will really help us with is counting people,” said Kieser. “So we can tell what times the library is busy and we can set up staffing a little more efficiently for those busy times.”

Kieser noted the services available to residents when they sign up for a free library card.

“There are so many services that are provided with free library cards, like lots of e-resources, audio books. You can order books from any library within Yellowhead (Regional Library) and the programs are free, Kieser added.

“Getting a library card just opens up a huge world. The library is not just a quiet place anymore. It’s a place where the community comes to be inspired, to get information and that’s what our goal is.”
