Towaw Cattle Co. Ltd. annual bull sale averages $8,027

The highest-selling bull went for $28,000

Towaw Cattle Co. Ltd. held their 45th Annual bull sale at the ranch of Jill and Kirk Wildman south of Sangudo on March 16, selling 39 yearling and long yearling Red Angus bulls including a pair of Black Angus bulls for an overall average of $8,027.

The sale, as in the past several sales, was a mix of live and online selling, with auctioneer Robert Lind calling the bids in front of a good crowd of bidders and buyers.

The highest-selling bull of this year's sale was Lot 14, RED TOWAW GRANITE 432K. Six Mile Ranch of Fir Mountain, Sask. purchased the bull for $28,000. Towaw retained a one-third semen interest in the bull for in-herd use only. This bull was born May 19, 2022 with a birthweight of 86 pounds. His sale weight was 1,960 pounds with a scrotal measure of 44 centimetres.

The second highest seller of the sale this year was Lot 38, RED TOWAW WARRIOR 530K, a June 18, 2022 bull with a modest birthweight of 78 pounds. His sale weight was 1,810 pounds with a 42 centimeter scrotal measure. This bull was purchased by Matt’s Red Angus of Smithers, BC for $16,500.

The third highest-selling bull was listed as Lot 1 in the sale catalogue. RED TOWAW GENTRY 401L was a yearling bull, born Jan 9, 2023 with a very modest birthweight of 73 pounds. His sale weight was 1,320 pounds with a scrotal measure of 36 centimetres. Heart Valley Farms of Courtney, B.C. purchased this bull for $15,000.

Volume buyers at this year’s sale was George Simpson of Simpson Farms of Jarvie, Alta. and Jim Keith of Entwistle, Alta. who each purchased three bulls.

Although this was their 45th Annual sale, Towaw Cattle Co. Ltd. is celebrating 50 years this summer at the ranch south of Sangudo, and have been selling bulls the entire time. Kirk Wildman says probably 75 per cent of the bulls are sold within a 100 kilometer radius of the ranch.

Towaw Cattle Co. was started by  Kirk’s parents, Dave and Gail Wildman, who are now sliding into retirement, but still maintain a healthy interest in the cattle business. Today, Kirk and Jill Wildman run the day-to-day operation, with the annual sale held at the facility on their farm a couple miles north of Dave and Gail’s home place.

In his notes in the sale catalogue, Kirk said although there is change, the thing that hasn’t changed is their commitment to supplying the best maternal Angus genetics; still their number one priority.

“We appreciate the support from our friends and neighbours and thank you all for welcoming our family into the area so long ago,” he wrote.
