Two home games and two blow out wins for the Barrhead Midget ‘A’ Steelers.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, the Steelers completely dominated Fort McMurray Oil Barons 10 - 1. Two days later, the Steelers continued their supremacy defeating the CNN Spurs 10-0 in their last exhibition game.

However, the regular season will not be quite as easy, says Steelers’ head coach Trevor Whiting.

“It was your typical tiering game. We played a strong, disciplined team game. We controlled the puck, it didn’t matter if it was while we were regular strength or killing a penalty,” he said after Monday’s game.

Whiting added normally the team plays against teams a tier higher, but said the game against Fort McMurray was an anomaly.

“They only had a couple of practices before they had to play us. They have a great group of kids that were a pleasure to talk to and they will get better,” he said.

In their next game, which as of deadline had not been scheduled, Barrhead will play against teams in the same tier (Tier I the highest level).

“We now will be playing in the interlock playing against teams in other (northern Alberta) leagues, North Central, North Eastern and Sturgeon Pembina. That’s when the true competition will begin,” Whiting said.

Despite the two lopsided victories the team has played two strong opponents splitting to road games against Drayton Valley and Athabasca.

On Oct. 1, the Steelers lost 6 - 5 against Drayton followed by a 6 - 4 win in Athabasca five days later. Whiting said the game in Athabasca was especially competitive and was close right up to the final minutes.

As for the upcoming season, Whiting said he is excited to see what it might bring.

“It’s a really good group of boys that have good parents. It’s going to be a fun year,” he said.
