It opened with a pledge to donate proceeds from their 50/50 draw towards family-violence prevention program Thrive.

The regular season game Nov. 24, between the Barrhead Steelers and the Athabasca Hawks, was dominated by the Steelers and ended 4-1.

In the first period, Luke Szybunka scored in the first five minutes, with an assist from Frank Scholten and Jona Cisse and from then onward, it was a Steelers game.

For nearly 30 minutes, Hawks goaltender Brady Bilsky deflected shot after shot from Steelers players — 34 to 0 for Athabasca, before Hawks’ player Daytona Houle managed to sneak one past Steinbring on a break-away in the second period, against the flow of the game.

Barrhead answered Athabasca with a pair from Landon Petiot, one on an assist from Devyn Kerr and Justin Haltiner.

The score now, 3-1, Barrhead cemented their win in the third with another goal from Szybunka.

“November is family violence prevention month and tonight’s game was donated to all the men, women and families working to see their way through family violence to a better, safe and healthier future,” Haltiner said, adding the players showed their support for preventing family violence by sporting purple tape on their sticks.
