Making art out of chocolate

It is surprising how fast time can fly. One minute you’re in school learning a valuable skill, the next minute you’re focusing your efforts on getting a business up and running.

It is surprising how fast time can fly.

One minute you’re in school learning a valuable skill, the next minute you’re focusing your efforts on getting a business up and running.

At least that’s what I took away from my interview with Elien de Herdt regarding her bakery.

If you aren’t aware of it, the bakery is attached to her parent’s greenhouse.

I suggest you take a few minutes and stop into De Herdt’s Garden to see for yourself the culinary treats that await you.

Many people around here might not think a greenhouse would be the place to be in the wintertime but the pastries, chocolates and breads that Elien makes in her shop are world-class in my opinion and the atmosphere is very pleasing.

Whether you’re looking for an almond bread or a snowman shaped macaroon, a chocolate Santa or another chocolate-based treat, there’s no better place to spend time than at Elieneke’s Bake Shop.

I’m not trying to dissuade you from any of the other businesses but De Herdt is, in case you haven’t been keeping up, one of the select few Young Bakery Hopefuls who was invited to participate on Team Canada earlier this year.

She went to Belgium to learn the art of becoming a chocolateer and brings to our community something that nobody else in the area is doing.

It’s that time of year when we’re all looking for stocking stuffers, sweets and other unique gifts and you wouldn’t believe some of the things she has to offer.

I sound like I’m gushing but the truth is, in talking to Elien on a number of occasions I’ve gotten a real sense of just how passionate she is about her work.

It isn’t just chocolate to her.

It’s art.

If you don’t believe me, again, I encourage you to take a few minutes and stop in, say hello and talk to her.

I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Kudos are certainly due to De Herdt for having the first year under her belt, for being nominated and winning the New Kid On The Block award Oct. 21 and for bringing new treats to our community.
