Local golfer finishes first at provincial qualifier

For Barrhead resident and BCHS student Ty Steinberg, the Men’s Amateur Provincial Qualifier held at Barrhead Golf Club’s 18-hole course went perfectly.

Held Tuesday, June 7, Steinberg, who finished first out of 25 who qualified, said he had not even thought about winning.

“I knew the cut line would be in the low seventies, so I was shooting for a 75, or a 76, but the weather was awesome and the ball carried pretty far,” Steinberg said, adding coming away with a 71 was something he had not expected.

“It felt great to be on the green, even if I got off to a slow start.”

Steinberg said birding the second hole is what got his round going.

“I came out after that and hit my first tee shot right into the trees,” he said, adding he ended up chipping out and bogeying the hole.

By the time he reached the 11th hole however, Steinberg said he was in fine spirits and then his caddie told him to birdie the shot.

“I put the ball to about four feet from that hole,” he said, adding every aspect of his game was on point.

Steinberg’s next tournament appearance will be at the provincial championship in Innisfail, to be held July 19 to July 22.
