Last call for street festival volunteers

The Street Festival is a big deal. It takes a lot of time and effort from a handful of people to make it happen.

The Street Festival is a big deal.

It takes a lot of time and effort from a handful of people to make it happen.

Between the regular attractions – the bouncy castle, live entertainment and petting zoo, and the addition of the Fire Department sponsored hose coupling competition, as well as the BBQ Cook-Off moved from last year’s Blue Heron Fair Days, there is going to be something for everyone to enjoy June 11.

Last week, the Barrhead Leader published an article from Street Festival committee members seeking more volunteers, and this week, we elected to use this editorial space to make a similar push.

Volunteers make this community what it is.

Without your continued help and support, the majority of events sponsored by your neighbours, friends, employers or co-workers would be understaffed and those same people would be quickly overwhelmed.

That’s why we are asking you to donate some of your free time, because that way it is not just the same old faces doing all of the work.

Committee members have said they are looking for people to help with set-up and clean up afterwards, and maybe a few extra hands to help run events scattered throughout the day.

The tasks won’t be strenuous or overly time-consuming and the help is genuinely appreciated — if you can’t do it but know somebody who could, perhaps they could contact a member of the Street Festival committee, through the library or the Barrhead Leader instead.

Barrhead residents place a great deal of value on volunteerism and community spirit and we see that on a near-constant basis.

Right now our attention is on the plight of the people of Fort McMurray and surrounding areas, as well as the men and women fighting the wildfires threatening the communities affected and rightly so.

But let’s not forget that all that donated time, effort and resources is voluntary.

There are plenty of options for volunteering in this area, not necessarily only at the Street Festival, so if one organization says no to you, don’t give up.
