Barrhead dominates Wabamun in provincials

Provincial hockey games can be exciting events for spectators, and even more so if, after one or two periods, the end result is a foregone conclusion. Thursday night’s game between the Barrhead Atom 2 Eagles and the Wabamun Wildcats was no exception.

Provincial hockey games can be exciting events for spectators, and even more so if, after one or two periods, the end result is a foregone conclusion.

Thursday night’s game between the Barrhead Atom 2 Eagles and the Wabamun Wildcats was no exception.

For the Atom 2 teams, this was the first game of a three-game series.

The first period saw the Eagles soar into the lead early on, both in terms of goals with Harley Brand scoring one unassisted –his first of the game, bringing the score to 1-0 for Barrhead, and in terms of penalties – Trent Gravel and Brand both served two minutes each for tripping.

However, the second period is what decided the game.

Adam Assaf led the foray into what had the potential to become a solid blow-out for the visiting Wildcats, scoring one with an assist from Emma Weeks.

Two minutes later, Brand scored again with help from Austin Cross, bringing the score to 3-0.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, it seemed they had lost some of their momentum at that point, and Wabamun stepped up their own game by scoring a goal, which ended the Eagles uncontested lead and brought the score to 3-1.

Following that anomaly, Assaf scored his second goal with assistance from Miller Ferguson and Ethan Grossenbacher, and Lane White managed his own unassisted goal, bringing the score to 5-1.

The third period saw Wabamun score again, though Barrhead quickly returned the favour, with Tray Preuss’ for a final score of 6-2 for Barrhead.

Barrhead Eagles coach Nicole Uden said she was proud of her team.

“I guess we’ll have to be on the look-out for the Wildcat’s revenge,” she added.
