Barrhead Composite High School’s (BCHS) two junior varsity (JV) Gryphons volleyball teams came home with medals after competing in a one-day tournament at BCHS.

The women’s team won gold by defeating the Edson Pacers in the finals in two straight sets, 25 to 15, respectively.

The women qualified for the finals by finishing with a two win, one loss record in their pool (Edson, St. Mary’s in Westlock and Fort Saskatchewan) and then defeating Stony Plain and Onoway in the qualifying rounds of the playoffs.

On the men’s side, the Gryphons after taking the first set by a score of 25 to 23, lost the next two 25 to 22 and 15 to 7 to take the silver medal.

To get to the finals the men’s JV squad took a slightly different path. Due to the smaller number of teams, Barrhead, St. Mary’s and R.F. Staples in Westlock and Edson it was decided that there would only be one pool and that the finalists would be the top two teams after the round robin competition.

Barrhead finished with a record of two wins and one loss. The loss was to Edson in their second match of the tournament.
