An expats view of the States

To the editor,

For those of you who might be under the assumption that life in the States right now is pure upheaval and discord: It’s not. We’ve been living here just fine for eight months now. We are Canadian, and didn’t have a horse in this race (election).

Yes, there are probably pockets of discord, but know that what you’re seeing on Canadian news stations and websites isn’t giving you the true picture. It’s distorted and distracting. There’s plenty of turmoil in Canada right now too, though the bombardment of sensational political stories out of the States may be clouding that.

A few friends of mine from Alberta, some from Barrhead, have mentioned how our being in the States must be. Be careful to what you open your ears to hear. If I’ve learned anything from living in the States, it’s that Americans speak up. They live out loud. They are proud of their country. It’s precious to them. Be proud of Canada. Do what’s in your power to better Canada, however small a contribution that might be. Don’t gaze over the border... but rather, focus on your own influence, in your own country. Realize what’s changing for your family financially and otherwise under your current governments.

Turn off the TV, because it’s not all that accurate anyway. That can’t be argued. Focus on what’s going on in Canada... and love Canada. Roll up your sleeves, look away from the south, and get involved in Canada . . not the sensationalism you’re being fed from half-truths out of America. A proud Canadian, living in American’s deep south.
