Scott Cook, a balladeer who considers Edmonton home, is coming to Barrhead.

On Jan. 5, at 8 p.m., the Canadian Folk Music Awards nominee for Best Emerging Artist will be performing at Barrhead Composite High School’s drama theatre.

“We did a showcase last October and as a result, we ended up getting a lot of bookings for all of these small towns across Alberta,” Cook said, adding this will be the first time for him in Barrhead.

“I’m looking forward to it because it [the show] is a theatre gig and I like playing those more than some of the other venue types. It’s more intimate.”

Cook will be joined onstage by his band, The Second Chances, and said the show will be comprised of a mixture of sing-a-longs, roots music and storytelling.

“We’ve only toured Western Canada and we’ve been down to Washington as a group, but I tend to go it alone when I’m going overseas and play with the band when I’m closer to home.”

“I’ve always been into music and writing songs,” he said. “I can’t really say what inspired me in the first place but to actually get started playing — I was probably 15 at the time and Nirvana had just come to my attention. I got an electric guitar and a distortion pedal and was really getting into it. In the beginning I didn’t make a lot of money and I went through a variety of genres but I always wanted to do acoustic, folk-type music. Around 2007, while I was living in Taiwan, I decided this was something I wanted to pursue professionally and here I am today.”

Cook, 40, has been performing his unique brand of finger-picked folk ever since and is currently on a world-wide tour in support of the 2015 album, ‘Scott Cook and the Long Weekends Go Long’.

“We do have a new record coming out, called ‘Further Down The Line’ and that will be available along with the rest of our albums,” he added.
