The Barrhead Midget 1 Steelers added a pair of victories to their undefeated streak over the weekend, hosting Drayton Valley on Friday night for a 7-2 victory and then defeating Battle River 3-2 in an away game on Saturday.

The home game on Friday was fairly unremarkable, as Barrhead jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first period off of goals by Landon Petiot, Jeremy DeVries, Luke Szybunka and Brendan Bujold twice.

Petiot then put the score up to 6-1 early in the second period, and while Drayton Valley fired back with one of their own before the end of the second, neither team scored for the remainder of the match.

Though Bujold and Petiot had two goals each, the players who accumulated the most points were DeVries (one goal and two assists) and Colton Bondarchuk (three assists.

Saturday’s away game was a different story. After travelling more than three hours to Sedgewick, which is located southeast of Edmonton, the Steelers were pitted against a very hard-hitting Battle River team.

The Steelers ended the first period tied 1-1 off a goal by Petiot, who was assisted by Devyn Kerr and Justin Haltiner. Petiot would also score the only goal of the second period unassisted.

Up 2-1 going into the third, Bujold scored the winning goal off assists by Justin and Sheldon Dewsnap. Though Battle River brought the score up to 3-2 before the end of the third, they were unable to tie up the game.

While Barrhead made 32 shots on goal, Barrhead goalie Colton Griffiths faced 30 shots.

The Steelers will next host Battle River for a home game at the Barrhead Agrena on Friday, Dec. 14, at 8:30 p.m.

Steelers Toy Drive

While the team was successful on the ice, the bigger achievement of the night was the Steelers’ Toy Drive.

Fans coming out to the game were asked to bring a donation for the Santa’s Toybox campaign put out by Family and Community Support Services (FCSS).

Steelers’ manager Michelle Haltiner said she had never seen the box at the front of the Agrena so overflowing with toys, and there were enough donations to fill up two other pails.

“This is the best year we’ve had (for the Toy Drive),” she said. “I was impressed with how many toys we got this year.”

Michelle said the Steelers were going to deliver the donations over to FCSS on Monday afternoon after school.
