Stay classy Barrhead

Time has a way of slipping away from us when we least expect it. Sometimes we think that it will stretch on into infinity but the reality is that all-to-often, there just isn’t enough of the stuff to go around.

Time has a way of slipping away from us when we least expect it.

Sometimes we think that it will stretch on into infinity but the reality is that all-to-often, there just isn’t enough of the stuff to go around.

I’m mindful of that fact today as you read these words, the bulk of my last column to be published in the Barrhead Leader, at least for the foreseeable future.

You see, my dad has a late stage of brain cancer.

While I hope for the best, I’m also preparing for the worst and that’s why I have decided to take a leave of absence from my job.

It was an easy decision.

I already have enough regrets and do not need to add to the list by not going.

So that’s that, cue the applause.

You all get a reprieve.

I’ll miss all of you, even if you don’t feel the same.

To the councillors and politicians I deal with on a bi-weekly basis, the chamber reps, athletes, artists and even the folks I see in Barrhead Provincial Court, it’s been a hell of a ride.

I’ve learned a lot and seen some of the craziest things in the three years I’ve been here. I’ve even shared a joke or two at my own expense.

Do me a favour and don’t change too much while I’m away.

I’ll be happy if there’s a McDonalds or a Wendy’s or whatever, but let’s not see another Champion Feeds closure OK?

I’ll be thinking about you, rest assured.

Beyond that, I want to entreat all of you to slow down and spend as much time with your loved ones as you can.

Life is too short to waste on arguments and bad vibes.

If life’s taught me one thing, it’s that.

It took hitting a moose eight months ago and my dad’s diagnosis for me to get the crap out from between my ears.

Don’t let it take you that long.

And if you could spare a moment and pray for my dad, I’d really appreciate it.

Until we meet again Barrhead.

Take care of yourselves and stay classy.
