Learning curling from the professionals

It’s not every day that someone gets a chance to not only meet, but learn from one of their professional sports idols, but that is exactly what happened to 16 members of Barrhead’s Little Rock and Jr. Curling program.

On Saturday, Nov. 3 junior curling coach Krista Measures arranged for two members of Brendan Bottcher’s curling rink, lead Karrick Martin and third Darren Moulding to put on a day of instruction.

Team Bottcher has won the Alberta Provincial men’s curling championship for the last two years and was a finalist at the Tim Hortons’ national championship in the spring.

The day started on the ice, with Martin and Moulding, instructing their students on how to properly deliver a stone, followed by on off-ice session and further on-ice instruction and drills. The day ended with a question and answer/autograph session.

“This is something that has been in the works for a while, but I wasn’t sure it would be possible,” Measures said. “In the end, it wasn’t too hard. I ended up e-mailing them and asked if they ever put on instructional camps. It turns out they do. Finding a time when they could come was the most difficult part.
