Hockey season just around the corner

Residents wanting to take in a little hockey action at the Barrhead Agrena on the weekends will have no shortage of games to choose from. That is because the Barrhead Minor Hockey Association (BMHA) will ice 11 teams for 2018/19 season.

Residents wanting to take in a little hockey action at the Barrhead Agrena on the weekends will have no shortage of games to choose from.

That is because the Barrhead Minor Hockey Association (BMHA) will ice 11 teams for 2018/19 season.

“Things went really well last week [tryouts] and if things hold, we will have a minimum of two teams at every age level,” said BHMA president Roseanne Bain, adding when the season begins they expect to have about 200 players registered.

There will be two teams at the initiation, peewee and bantam levels and three in atom.

Originally Bain said it looked like they were only going to be able to ice one bantam club, but seven players from Mayerthorpe registered with BMHA because they didn’t have enough players for a team of their own.

Currently, BHMA is in the process of interviewing prospective coaches, something that is expected to be complete within the next week.

At the midget level, Barrhead will ice the Renegades and the provincial silver medalists, the Steelers.

Practices begin the last week in September with the first games being played Sept. 29.

“It’s going to be a great season and I want to thank everyone who has so graciously volunteered their time and energy. Without them there wouldn’t be hockey in Barrhead,” she said.
