Dear Editor,

Autumn is here, and with it comes fond memories of Halloween in Barrhead.

Every kid in town went to every house. Nobody worried about foreign objects in their child’s bag of goodies. We knew everyone, and where the good stuff was. Mrs. Swan made candied apples. That was the best.

There was always hijinks going on. I remember Lorne Jenkins, the principal, trying to head off the mischief in the right direction. He told us about the year he and his friends as a Halloween trick, stooked a farmer’s field. I can tell you that never caught on.

The outhouse was the favorite target. Move them off the hole and back a few feet. Augh, disgusting. Drag them to the centre of main street, that was always a mystery. Who did that?

In the city, every child or group of children, comes with a guardian. Only wrapped candy is trusted. Heck, we trusted everyone. My Mom never knew where we went and she also knew every kid who came to our house.

Nobody wore store bought costumes. A bag over your head, and a sheet, and you were good to go…

These were good times. Nice to have those memories. Thank you Barrhead.
