It’s time to celebrate Canada’s birthday again, and what better way is there to do that but take in some local events? The Town of Barrhead has an array of activities planned for July 1, as does the Neerlandia Sports Committee.

Kevin Berger – Leader Staff

Barrhead residents have a couple of options for celebrating Canada Day this Monday, July 1, including a carnival in Barrhead and a tractor pull in Neerlandia.

Linda Prokott, recreation programs and services co-ordinator for the Town of Barrhead, said the Town of Barrhead has some new additions to the Canada Day celebration this year, including a pancake breakfast, a bike parade and a movie night.

The pancake breakfast will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Barrhead Agrena lobby. The price is $2 per plate, and proceeds go towards the town’s summer programs.

The breakfast will then be followed by a bike parade along the Agrena’s walking track at 11 a.m., provided there are at least 10 children signed up for the bike parade. Everyone who does sign up, however, will receive a goodie bag.

The deadline to pre-register is Wednesday, June 26. The registration form can be found at the town’s website (barrhead.ca) or at the Barrhead Aquatics Centre.

After the parade, the Agrena will be the site of a Canada Day Carnival from noon to 4 p.m. The attractions on offer will include bouncy castles, a dunk tank and a “high strike” carnival game, where you strike a target with a hammer and try to ring a bell. Game tickets will cost 50 cents apiece or $10 for a bracelet. There will also be a concession selling popcorn, candy and other treats.

Hot dogs will also be sold at the Freson Bros. parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Again, proceeds will be going towards the town’s Summer Recreation Programs.

Those wanting to beat the heat can instead head to the Barrhead Aquatic Centre for a loonie swim from 12 to 6 p.m.

In the evening, there will be a showing of the 2019 remake of Mary Poppins at 8:30 p.m. The film was selected via an online survey. Finally, there will be a fireworks display at 10:30 p.m. by the Agrena.

July 1 in Neerlandia

The Neerlandia Sports Committee will be organizing its own Canada Day celebration in the hamlet, starting with a $2 pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. inside the old co-op service centre.

An antique tractor pull will be hosted throughout the day. Registration and weigh-in begins at 7:30 a.m. and the tractor pull will start at 9:30 a.m. The competition will run until noon and then break for lunch before resuming again in the afternoon. For more information about entering, contact Pieter Van Daaselaar at (780) 674-1234.

Starting at 10 a.m., there will be a series of kids’ activities hosted at the old service centre and the new rink. The activities will include a bouncy house, face painting, a sand pile, water ramp and a concession, including a pie booth.

There will also be a bench show hosted at the Neerlandia Public Christian School (NPCS) gymnasium by the local Historical Society.
