Close but no cigar, or in this case a gold medal.

On Saturday, Nov. 17, the Barrhead Composite High School Senior Boys and Girls Gryphons Volleyball teams narrowly missed a chance to represent the North Central zone at the Alberta Schools Athletic Association’s 3A Provincial Championships after losing in the championship game to the Morinville Wolves. The girls  lost in three set (losing the first set 25-22, winning the second 27-25 and losing 15-7 in the tie-breaker) while the boys lost in two sets by the identical score of 25-23 at home tournament.

The boys started the tournament, Friday, defeating Westlock’s R.F. Staples in a closely contested three match set. The next day they they defeated Whitecourt’s Hilltop High School  25-14 and 25-9.

The win placed Barrhead at the top of their pool and gave them an automatic birth to the semi-finals against Edson, who they defeated in two sets.

On the girls side, the Gryphons opened against Morinville losing in three sets. They bounced back the next day defeating Hilltop High School, in two sets 25-19 and 25-21.

With a 1-1 record, Barrhead finished second in their pool, putting them into the quarter finals and a two-set victory against Drayton Valley, before winning their semi-final match against Westlock.
