It was closer than they would have liked, but the Barrhead Midget 2 team managed to squeak by with a 7-5 victory in Saturday’s home game with the visiting Pembina Midget 1 squad.

Barrhead and the Pembina team traded the lead back and forth for most of the game.

Although Barrhead got on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal by Carter Bergseth, their opponents fired back with two goals of their own.

Kayden Harder was barely able to tie up the score 2-2 before the end of the first period.

Barrhead jumped ahead again in the second with two goals by Devon Lloyd and Tyson Hornberger, but the Pembina squad fired back with two goals to tie it up 4-4.

They finally gained a definitive lead with two additional goals by Harder to complete a hat trick.

Up 6-5 in the third, Peyton O’Malley notched one final goal for Barrhead to secure a 7-5 victory.

In terms of shots on goal, Barrhead managed 47 shots on Pembina’s net while they fired back with 37 shots.

Assistant coach Laine Baker said the third period was more typical of how they like to play and normally do play.

“The first two, we kind of let them get away from us,” he said. “But in the third, I thought we opened up.”

Baker noted they had played this team once before and beat them “worse the first time,” although that was at the start of the season.

He said the Barrhead Midget 2 team is currently second in their tier. Noting that most of the players are in their first year of Midget hockey, he said the team is coming along well.
