The Barrhead Composite High School (BCHS) Junior Varsity girls’ volleyball team won a bronze medal in their first tournament of the year this weekend at R.F. Staples School in Westlock.

Both the JV boys and girls were in attendance at the R.F. Staples Invitational, which ran on Friday and Saturday.

As indicated earlier, this was both teams’ first tournament of the year, not including the Lou Rondeau Alumni Tournament over the Labour Day long weekend.

During round robin action on Friday and Saturday, the JV girls fell to Kinuso in two sets (19-25, 12-25) and Morinville in three sets (20-25, 25-18, 14-16).

However, they soundly defeated Thorhild in two sets (25-12, 25-18) and scored another narrow victory over Living Waters in three sets (18-25, 25-11, 15-8).

That was good enough to place them third in their pool, which sent the Gryphons in the quarter-final against the Parkland Composite High School Packers from Edson.

Here, the Barrhead team put in an incredibly solid performance that gave them the win in two sets of 25-21 and 25-13.

That immediately put them in the quarter-final against Morinville Composite High School. Sadly, Barrhead was unable to avenge their earlier loss and fell in two straight sets, although they nearly managed a comeback in their second set.

In the bronze medal match against the Edson Knights, the Gryphons were pitted against an opponent with a lot of very tall, hard-hitting players. They managed to win the first set 25-22, but Edson came back and won the second set 25-16 by capitalizing on Barrhead’s errors.

The third set was as close you could make it, but Barrhead was able to squeak by with a 15-13 victory.

Meanwhile, the JV boys had a rough go in Westlock. In five round robin matches, the boys only managed to win one set against Kinuso, which left them in fifth place. They did not advance to the playoffs as a result.
