Weather permitting, a Bell CH-146 Griffon helicopter from CFB Edmonton will make an appearance at the 10th annual Fly-in Breakfast at the Barrhead Airport this Sunday, June 2.

Shawn Stephani of the Barrhead Flying Club, which hosts the annual event, said the Fly-in Breakfast will run from 8-11 a.m.

Parking will be right by the terminal, and tables and chairs will be set up in one of the hangars. The cost of breakfast will be $8 per person.

Depending on weather and other circumstances, public turnout for the Fly-in Breakfast has been as high as 300 to 400 people.

Anywhere from 30 to 60 airplanes flown by out-of-towners might also land at the airport that morning.

“We put on the event just to create awareness of the Barrhead Airport for people in the community,” said Stephani.

“It is common for different towns to host fly-in breakfasts, to give pilots … a place to go.”

As indicated earlier, Stephani said they’re hoping to be visited by a CH-146 Griffin, which has been deployed by the Canadian Armed Forces since 1995 on missions both at home and abroad.

According to the Canadian Armed Forces’ website, the CH-146 Griffon is primarily used for tactical transportation of troops and material. It is also used on search and rescue missions, surveillance, Army training, casualty evacuation and counter-drug operations.

When asked how it was arranged to have the aircraft fly out to the event, Stephani indicated that it was arranged through a Barrhead resident’s connections.
