Barrhead Composite High School’s Jaguars opened their season with a pair of Dec. 13 home games against Neerlandia Public Christian School (NPCS) and Pembina North Community School (PNCS).
In the first game the Jaguars faced the NPCS Eagles.
On the girls side the Jaguars got off to a strong start outpacing the Eagles by 10 points halftime lead, before winning the game 28 to 21.
On the boys side the Jaguars defeated Neerlandia 41-31.
In their second game against the PNCS Panthers Barrhead split their games.
The boys won convincingly 63 to 25 while the girls lost in a nail-biter, 20-18.
Girls coach Warren Warhehime said he was pleased by his team’s effort.
“It was pretty scrambly, which is what I kind of expected. I think we only have four girls from last year, everybody is new to the team,” he said. “They worked hard and they showed improvement all the way through especially in the second game. That is the most important thing.”
Boys coach Colin Erickson echoed Warehime’s sentiments saying in their first game the team was inconsistent with a lot of turnovers, but the team showed marked improvement in their second match-up.
