Sue Gawlak
Managing Editor

After covering a variety of other beats, including municipal, provincial and federal politics, health, crime and court, Sue was appointed the Gazette’s assistant editor in the early 1990s before taking over the editor’s desk.

During her time with the newspaper, the Gazette and its newsroom and photography staff have been recognized locally, provincially and nationally with a wide variety of awards. Sue has also contributed to the American Press Institute’s community newspaper workshops.

Ileiren Byles
Assistant Editor
780-460-5527
Ileiren has spent a lot of time in other newsrooms. At the age of 15 she knew she was destined for newspapers, so immediately began a job as an editorial assistant at the Lethbridge Herald. By 16, Ileiren was working in the Edmonton Sun’s research library. Eight years later, she’d tried her hand at copy editing and reporting.

Ileiren’s only brief interlude in the news business came in the form of travel to Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. When she returned to Canada, she started on the small community circuit, reporting in Vermilion, Alberta and Fernie, B.C. Ileiren also spent two years as the editor of the Omineca Express in Vanderhoof, B.C.

Now happily settling into the provincial beat in St. Albert, Ileiren is thrilled to be an observer of the dynamic political scene of Alberta. Education, health care, justice and children’s services are just a few of the topics that need to be taken from the political arena and brought into the homes and lives of readers.

To contact Ileiren with story ideas call 460-5527 or e-mail ibyles@stalbert.greatwest.ca

Glenna Hanley

She has been twice nominated by the Canadian Association of Journalists for awards in feature writing and has won first-place awards from the Canadian Community Newspapers Association and the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association for feature stories.
