Stolen truck used to rob jewellery store
By Lauren Den Hartog
Leader Staff
Barrhead RCMP were called to Apollos Jewellers of Barrhead in the early morning on Tuesday, July 22, at approximately 12:50 a.m. where they discovered a pick-up truck had been driven through the front window and into the store. According to RCMP, a lone, male suspect entered the store and filled a bag with an undisclosed amount of jewelry before leaving the premises.

The truck, a dark blue 2004 Ford F350, was stolen from Stephani Motors in Barrhead. The vehicle was found in an alley a short distance away and is now in the custody of the RCMP.

According to a witness, the suspect left the area driving another pick-up truck. Some time later, members of the Mayerthorpe detachment stopped a pick-up truck with a female driver and a male passenger. The male provided a false name to police and while police were checking information, the suspect escaped.

The investigation has revealed that the male suspect had originally stolen a two tone blue GMC pick-up truck from a home in Evansburg and drove to Barrhead to commit the robbery. Upon returning to the Mayerthorpe/Evansburg area, the stolen truck ran out of gas and an unsuspecting motorist stopped to lend assistance and offered to drive the suspect to Mayerthorpe.

The suspect is described as male, white, medium build, in his late 20s with shoulder-length brown hair and a scruffy beard. He was wearing a dark, possibly green button-up shirt and baggy light-coloured pants.

According to Fred Bard, owner of Apollo’s, the stolen jewelry was later recovered. The Bards have owned Apollos for four years and were robbed earlier this year on March 6.

"We’re planning on putting some pylons in front of the store," he said when asked if he was planning to upgrade the alarm.

"The police are doing a good job," he added. "I’m happy with them."

Anyone with information about this crime are asked to call the Barrhead RCMP at 780-674-4848 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
