Brett Branden wins Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Finals

Rodeo is by far one of the most popular events in Barrhead.

The Barrhead Ag Society will be holding a Wildrose Rodeo Association (WRA) sanctioned rodeo in August at the Blue Heron Fair. In September, the Ag Society will again host the WRA finals in which there are generally at least 15 local contestants. "There are over 100 contestants who compete in these finals. Brett will be competing in the fair rodeo & hopes to qualify for the finals. This year for the first time there will also be a High School Rodeo held at the beginning of May. I am sure there will be quite a few local contestants in that as well," says Brett’s mother Colleen Branden.

Brett Branden attended the college bull riding finals in Edmonton, and proudly announced he "ended up winning the bull riding championship there."

Branden has been bull riding for three years. According to him, it takes quite a bit of practice to get good at the sport.

During the college finals, participants have to get through three rounds and stay on the bull for at least 8 seconds.

This didn’t seem to be a challenge for Branden who grew up around rodeos and decided to try riding steers, which would later lead him to bull riding.

But just being the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo champion for Branden is not enough.

"I’d like to get a lot better. I will keep on competing. I will practice throughout all this year and that will keep me right involved. I’d like to compete nationally or even internationally one day," said Branden.

Although being the bull riding champion at the moment makes Branden feel good, he also remembers times where his passion put him in some danger.

"It can be dangerous. I have been in a couple of accidents already. The worst that happened to me was when I broke my jaw last year. I had to let it heal before I was able to get back on a bull. It probably took 6 weeks to heal. It didn’t scare me too much. You can’t think about it too much otherwise it would throw you out of the game. A few of my friends broke their legs," added Branden.

Right now, all Branden can think about is his trophy buckle that he received at the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Finals. He is also planning to compete in the Wildrose Rodeo competitions in Barr-head later this year.
