Barrhead Figure Skating club members have participated in three different competitions this year, earning a variety of gold, silver and bronze awards. Front row (L-R): Peyton Lovich, Mackenzie Bowyer, Violet Timm, Megan Boutlier, Faith Frigon. Back row (L-R): Cori Leclerc, Graysyn Schlitter, Deanna Klein, Presley Kavanagh, Ava Machuk.

Figure skating season is coming to a close and Star Skate program instructor Misty Blake says she is proud of all of the skaters.

“There are a pile of ribbons and they have all won quite a bit,” Blake said March 6, adding the Barrhead Figure Skating club is getting ready to host its year-end ice show this month in the Barrhead Agrena, March 18 at 2 p.m.

“We decided to theme it with Canada’s 150th birthday and we’re calling the carnival ‘A Canadian Celebration, Eh’,” she said.

Blake said multiple skaters from the Star Skate program have attended three different competitions this year, adding star levels range from the introductory star 1 program all the way up to star 10.

“They have all done very well. It’s been mostly gold and silver awards. What our girls do is not easy, by any means. For them, especially the Star 1 skaters brand new to the program, to achieve this many gold awards is crazy,” she said.

One particular skater, Deanna Klein, won bronze for interpretive dance at the Central Region Open in Rocky Mountain House Feb. 24 to 26.

“Our club has two girls at the introductory level for interpretive dance and one, Deanna, at the gold level. She [Deanna] actually placed and in addition to winning the bronze medal at the Central Region Open, will now be heading to the Star Skate Championships for the gold interpretive at the end of March.”

Blake said there is a possibility other members of the club will be heading to another competition, the 2017 United Cycle Sunsational, held April 21 to 23 in Edmonton.
