Barrhead Minor Hockey Association’s (BMHA) coffers are a bit healthier and hopefully so are some of a number of area families thanks to the association’s latest fundraiser.

On Dec. 11, the BMHA distributed more than 8,300 pounds of carrots and potatoes to area residents raising $5,300 as part of what is usually a bi-annual fundraiser.

Unfortunately, this year because of crop damage caused by a hailstorm to the farm that supplies the produce, there will only be one.

Proceeds of the fundraiser go towards the general operation of the BMHA, helping to pay for everything from referees for the games and tournaments to the ice rental.

Sharon Mueller, BMHA Carrot sale organizer, said she came up with the idea to sell carrots as a fundraiser back in 2011, but for the last two years they have added potatoes to the menu.

“It is just another way to increase the amount of money we are able to raise,” she said.

Originally the fundraiser was supposed to be a one-off, but the first sale proved to be so popular the BHMA decided to hold it twice a year.

“A lot of groups sell chocolates or other stuff that people don’t really need, but how many are selling vegetables?” Mueller asked.

The other reason why she believes the fundraiser has become so popular is because of the quality of the produce.

It comes from a farm just outside Innisfail, which Mueller found through a farming association she and her husband belong to.

“The carrots are especially popular because they have a sweetness to them that you usually don’t find,” Mueller said.

She added this would be the last time she would be organizing the fundraiser, as her oldest child is graduating out of the BMHA, but that Jared and Ali Stranaghan will be taking up the mantel. The Stranaghans have been involved with the BHMA for a number of years.

“I just want to thank everyone who has made the fundraiser a success over the years and helping us keep the ice fees as low as possible so that more children can participate in hockey,” Mueller said.
