Tenth annual pumpkin walk on the horizon

It is that time of year again.

The 10th annual Barrhead Community Pumpkin Walk, hosted by the Paddle River Golf Course, is set to take place on Friday, Oct. 28 and one of the event sponsors Pembina West Co-op’s marketing and media coordinator Alyssa Kent says it will be the biggest event of its kind yet.

“It’s our 10th anniversary and we’re looking at having around 15 booths this year,” Kent said, adding it is possible more businesses will sign up to participate as the event draws nearer.

“In addition to the usual pumpkin display, fireworks and dance performance put on by Footworks Dance Academy, this year the Pembina West Co-op is giving away 10 golden tickets,” she said, adding such tickets will be dropped into 10 randomly selected candy bags for walk participants and each is redeemable for a gift basket courtesy of the store.

“When you line up to come into the pumpkin walk when it opens, we’ll be giving away these bags and none of us will know which bag has the tickets,” she added.

This year’s event is not being held on Halloween as it has in previous years.

“We decided to change the date of the event to the Friday before Halloween this year because we thought it would be a better fit for the community,” she said.

The change of dates ensures local businesses will have a better opportunity to participate.

“We aren’t trying to take away from Halloween itself. This event isn’t meant to be an alternative to trick-or-treating. It’s just an additional festivity,” she said.

One new thing being brought back is the scary maze.

“We’ve had a scary path in the past but we decided to forgo it for a few years,” Kent said, adding the maze is entirely optional and there will be signs that clearly indicate where it starts and finishes.

“It isn’t just for kids either. We have had lots of adults come through the pumpkin walk over the last 10 years and we encourage everyone to do so,” she said.

Gates open at 6:45 p.m. and fireworks will be at 8:30 p.m.
