Take time to be thankful

New Years is a wonderful time. It is a time to reflect and take stock of everything that has happened over the year, both triumphs and failures, and hopefully learn from them and move on stronger from the experience.

New Years is a wonderful time.

It is a time to reflect and take stock of everything that has happened over the year, both triumphs and failures, and hopefully learn from them and move on stronger from the experience.

Most of the time, the whole process takes the form of creating a New Year’s resolution, a yearly tradition when a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement.

Certainly, anything that helps a person make a positive life change should be encouraged.

Unfortunately, often these changes are short-lived. For those who are able to make a positive lasting change, congratulations.

I too, over the Christmas break contemplated attempting to make some sort of resolution that would change my life forever, but right now I am not ready for that.

Instead, I find myself still in a reflective mood, trying to grasp what some of the changes in my life and those around me really mean.

And through this process, I find myself more thankful for what is available to our residents through our many not-for-profit organizations, most notably Barrhead and District FCSS.

We are truly blessed having this organization in our community. While it is true FCSS organizations are in virtually every community in Alberta, very few provide the services offered here in Barrhead as I recently found out.

As I mentioned, some of the things that are happening in my life are not happening to me, but to others in my life, and as a consequence to our FCSS, I found myself looking for organizations that provide similar services and I found out there are none.

At least not in one convenient location, and this is in a much larger centre. Hopefully in time I will be able to find the same services that our FCSS offers, but if I do it will be in a number of different organizations, and more than likely, private and therefore more costly.

So even if you are one of the people who have made a resolution, take some time to reflect about what you are thankful for in your life. For those people who have ever found themselves in need, and live in Barrhead, I imagine one of the things on the top of your thankful list is our Family and Community Support Services.
