Steelers smash Jets

The Barrhead Steelers faced off against the Spruce Grove Jets on Wednesday, in Barrhead, for the last game of the first round of provincial qualifiers, and won with a final score of 5-2.

The Barrhead Steelers faced off against the Spruce Grove Jets on Wednesday, in Barrhead, for the last game of the first round of provincial qualifiers, and won with a final score of 5-2.

Zach Laun and Brad Bujold both scored assisted goals in the first period, answered by one from the visiting Jets, for an early 2-1 lead.

The second period saw the gap widen further as Barrhead managed two more goals, one from Tanner Whiting and the other by Declan Kummer, bringing the score to 4-1.

Despite the Jets scoring once more in the final minutes of the second, Barrhead cinched the game with an open-goal shot on the Jets’ net by Brady Derudder, in the first thirty seconds of the third.

“It was a great team game,” Steelers Head Coach Trevor Whiting said, adding the midget team played a disciplined game on Jan. 3.

The Steelers will face Drayton Valley in the next round. The next game in Barrhead will be at the Agrena at 7:10 p.m. on Feb. 11.
