The Barrhead Steelers faced off against the Spruce Grove Jets on Wednesday, in Barrhead, for the last game of the first round of provincial qualifiers, and won with a final score of 5-2.
Zach Laun and Brad Bujold both scored assisted goals in the first period, answered by one from the visiting Jets, for an early 2-1 lead.
The second period saw the gap widen further as Barrhead managed two more goals, one from Tanner Whiting and the other by Declan Kummer, bringing the score to 4-1.
Despite the Jets scoring once more in the final minutes of the second, Barrhead cinched the game with an open-goal shot on the Jets’ net by Brady Derudder, in the first thirty seconds of the third.
“It was a great team game,” Steelers Head Coach Trevor Whiting said, adding the midget team played a disciplined game on Jan. 3.
The Steelers will face Drayton Valley in the next round. The next game in Barrhead will be at the Agrena at 7:10 p.m. on Feb. 11.
