Steelers open 1660 season with home win

In hockey the shot clock or the even the final score are not always an accurate indication of how a game was played.

The Steelers Midget ‘A’ home opener on Friday, Oct. 28 is a perfect example. If one was to judge by the 7-4 final score against the Maskwacis Hawks, one might believe Barrhead dominated the game.

At the end of the first period the Steelers took a 3-1 lead on a pair of goals by Mitch Carstairs.

Dylan Callihoo also recorded a goal and two assists in the period.

In the second period the Steelers extended their lead outscoring their scoring three to one on efforts by Carstairs, Justin Haltiner and Callihoo.

In the third period Mario Acevedo completed the Steelers scoring.

Barrhead head coach Trevor Whiting said it was a good result considering the circumstances.

“We were a bit undermanned and you could really tell that in our play, especially as time went on,” he said.

The Steelers played without captain Tanner Whiting, who did not dress due to injury. They also lost Josh Starman early in the first period when he received a major penalty. Carstairs was playing with a bad cold or flu.

As a result Whiting said it was difficult to have set lines and the team’s play was disorganized for large periods of the game.

“Our goaltending was really strong. Ty (Steinbring) played a great game and he kept us in it,” he said. “And Mitch who was playing sick, ended up scoring a hat trick for us.”

As for what is next, Whiting said his team did not have a lot of time to get healthy. On Sunday, Oct. 30, the Steelers travel to Athabasca, after that he did not know as the rest of the schedule had not been released.

In all likelihood Tanner Whiting will not be available for the game and they still haven’t heard if Starman would receive a one game suspention. Editor’s note: Steelers and Athabasca played to a 4-4 tie and Tanner Whiting was able to dress.

“I don’t think so. It wasn’t a dirty game, we got a major and so did they, but they weren’t intentional,” he said, adding he hopes whatever Carstairs has will not go through the entire team.

Whiting said it is unfortunate timing that the Agrena’s running track is still not open. “When you only have nine skaters conditioning is so important, and because of the weather and how dark it is at this time of year, it isn’t safe to run outside,” he said.
