New club encourages runners of all abilities

Running is often a solitary sport, but it doesn’t have to be - at least if you are in Barrhead.

Running is often a solitary sport, but it doesn’t have to be - at least if you are in Barrhead.

About a month ago, Don Smith, who people may recognize from his stint on town council, decided to start a free running club called the Paddle River Pacers.

“It’s just something my daughters and myself decided to do a few weeks ago as a way to help encourage other people to get out there and be more active,” he said, adding he first started running about four years ago as a way to get into shape. “I noticed I was a little bit over weight and I thought it would be a good avenue to drop some pounds.”

As Smith continued to run, building up his endurance and stamina, a funny thing happened.

“I discovered I actually enjoyed running,” he said, adding since he began running he has progressed from taking part in five and 10 kilometre runs to half marathons, including the Fit For Motion Marathon in Barrhead in September.

This year Smith is working towards running in his first full marathon.

However, he realizes not everyone who joins the club is ready, or even wants to run a full marathon, or even race.

In its initial weeks the club has attracted on any given outing anywhere from five to 10 runners of all abilities.

“Depending on who shows up, one night we all might decide to go for a run/walk or break into smaller groups with some of the more experienced runners going on longer runs. We decide what we are going to do as a group,” Smith said.

Because the club has runners of all abilities, the members are not only able to provide moral support, but coaching. Besides Smith, the group sports a number of experienced runners who are always willing to pass on their knowledge to those just starting out.

“If you have a passion to run, or would just like to get a little more fit, come on out and share in our passion of health and wellness,” Smith said.

The Pacers meet every Monday and Thursday at 7 p.m. in front of the curling rink. There is no fee for joining. For more information on the Paddle River Pacers, check out their Facebook page.
