Barrhead Figure Skating Club (BFSC) coach Misty Blake made her comments to the Barrhead Leader in an emailed statement and says all 12 of the STAR skaters participating in the program this season have done a terrific job.

“There has been a huge improvement in the quality of their skating and every single one of our 12 STAR Skaters has attended at least one competition each,” Blake said, noting figure skating levels are not determined by age and added each person progresses at their own individual pace.

Blake explained skaters are grouped within their age categories.

“Whether a skater is 10 or 100, they start at STAR 1 and 11 of our skaters compete at the STAR 1, 2 or 3 level. The competitions can be tough, especially when you have only two minutes on the ice to execute many elements while in front of a bunch of strangers and evaluators. The ability to perform with confidence is probably the hardest part,” Blake said, adding while the levels are not ranked, each has set elements that must be performed.

STAR 1, for example, is an element assessment done in a group format to introduce skaters to the competition atmosphere.

Blake explained standards on skating elements such as jumps, spins and spiral sequences get progressively higher with each new level achieved.

“These girls love skating and spend so much time together it seems like they are all family. The skaters and their families support each other, whether at practice or at competitions and I am proud of their accomplishments,” Blake added.

BFSC figure skaters will be showcasing their skills at the upcoming “Under The Sea” themed March 18 carnival, held at the Barrhead Agrena beginning at 2 p.m.

Tickets are available in advance for $7 at Fyfes and the Agrena Concession.
