One local golfer is part of Team Canada.

Ty Steinbring finished the first leg of a four-day Canadian Junior Championship (CJC) tournament and says despite not making the final cut for the remainder of the event, he is excited about representing Canada in Scotland at the Euro Junior Golf Cup Aug. 5.

“Being part of Team Canada is an indescribable feeling. I don’t really know how to take it yet but it is quite the honour, honestly,” Steinbring said, adding the tournament will be held in St. Andrews, Scotland.

Prior to the trip, Steinbring participated in the CJC from July 31 to Aug. 1.

“I qualified for that through a Canadian Western Future Links tournament that was held in Fernie, B.C., earlier this year and managed to finish third. The CJC itself was held in Kingston, Ontario but unfortunately I did not make the cut and did not get the chance to play the last two days. I would have, but it’s OK,” he said.

His mother, Trish, agreed.

“We headed to Oakville, Ont. Aug. 2 where Ty met up with the rest of the Team Canada members and had the opportunity to train with them for two days. 156 of the top junior golfers from across Canada qualified for the CJC, 22 of which were from Alberta. The cut was the top 70 best scores from the first two days and on the first day, Ty shot a nine over par 79,” she said, adding on the second day, Ty shot a three over par 73 for a total of 12 over par.

“The cut ended up being eight over par so he missed the cut by four shots. He had a tough first day,” she added.

The Euro Junior Golf Cup is a three-day match play tournament between Canada, the United States and Scotland.
