With the course now open for the season, Paddle River Golf &Country Club board member Steve Kamminga says they are looking for volunteers and junior instructors.

“If you are new to the game, right now, we have two qualified adult golf instructors but we could definitely use some additional help,” Kamminga said, adding anyone interested in instructing younger golfers is urged to call the club.

The 84-member club, which boasts 2,399 total yards and a nine-hole course, is perfect for beginners, families and individuals interested in working on their short game.

“We have a brand new board that has helped to bring positive changes to the course and we’ve largely eliminated the weekend tournaments that made it extremely difficult for our members last year,” he said, adding despite the recent rainy weather, the course is open and carts are allowed.

“The greens are dry but the fairways are a bit soupy. We have water everywhere right now but, so long as people follow the cart signs, we are letting them,” he said.

Pro shop manager Crystal Dodgson said conditions are OK, but wet.

“The greens are in as good a shape as they can be for the weather we’ve been permitted and our groundskeeper is doing the best he can to stay on top of it,” she said.

Prices for nine-hole golf ranges from $20 during the week and $22 on weekends and 18-hole golf will cost you $30 and $32 respectively.

Kamminga said there are discounts for seniors and special days, such as Tuesdays, where golfers can play nine holes for $12.

“We have rentals if you don’t have your own clubs and carts too,” he said, adding it is all fairly inexpensive.

In addition to Ladies League on Mondays at 6 p.m. and Men’s League on Wednesdays at the same time, both of which are open to the public, Kamminga said there is a senior’s tournament June 3.

“That one is for members only but in July we have a Businessman’s Tournament, an inter-club tournament scheduled with the Barrhead Golf Club and a few lesser events such as a raffle for a signed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins jersey that will be going on July 1,” Kamminga said.
