Lighting up the community, one block at a time

It is a yearly tradition that brings the whole community together.

That is the gist of the message Light-Up parade planning committee member Cami Hall delivered to the Barrhead Leader Oct. 18. This year’s parade, which kicks off Nov. 3 with a fireworks display, begins at 7 p.m.

“We’re going to be setting off the fireworks in a different location this year because we heard visibility was an issue with previous Light-Up events,” Hall said, adding the committee had not yet finalized the location.

“Right now we’re waiting to hear back from the Fire Chief. He’s been given a few suggestions but we haven’t heard yet,” she added.

Hall said the Barrhead Fire Department’s T9 ladder truck will be in the parade.

“I don’t want to spoil it, but it looks like Santa Claus is going to be needing a roof-top rescue before he can make himself available for photos at Barb’s Sewing after the parade,” she said.

In addition to Santa and Tower 9, Hall said there will be a Food Bank collection unit included in the parade.

“It’s going to be with us the whole way, from start to finish and we want your help to fill it before we get to the end of Main Street. Santa will be receiving donations at Barb’s Sewing as well, so if you missed the parade or you want to donate more, you can do that while your kids take pictures.”

Home businesses are holding a market.

Hall said that the market, billed “Our Bells Are Jingling” is being held at Xpressions Dance &Fitness Centre.

“It’s basically tables filled with crafts and other merchandise from home-business merchants in our area,” she added.

In addition, local groups are holding their own events in conjunction with Light Up.

Barrhead Art Club president Carla Fry said the gallery, maintained by club members, will be hosting its own Christmas craft-and-art sale.

“There will be refreshments, hot chocolate and the like, and all of the members, our artists whose work adorns our walls, we’ll all be there too, so come on down and have a look or make a new friend,” Fry said.

In addition to their normal hours of operation, the Barrhead Art Gallery will be open during Light-Up Nov. 3, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
