Learning from others

Business, in my opinion, is all about networking.

I’m not a businessperson at the moment, but there was a five-year period where I was a self-publisher of a magazine.

I had plenty of opportunities to work with people from all across Canada, the U.S. and even overseas. When I needed an image or a reworked story from one of my contributors, it was only a telephone call or an e-mail away and vice versa, if a company wanted their logo or slogan on a certain page, we figured out how to make everyone happy.

Granted, I know there’s a bit more to networking in the business world than conversing and negotiating but that’s why I’m so pleased the Barrhead Chamber of Commerce, and by extension, the business community itself, is taking the opportunity to learn about Business Support Networks (BSN) this week.

In case you aren’t aware, Ministry of Labour workforce consultant Kristy Tuts is spearheading the inaugural Barrhead BSN meeting Jan. 25.

The meeting, taking place between 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., is being held in the Charles Godberson Rotary Room at the Agrena.

Basically, business-owners and representatives from the town, the county, Woodlands County, Yellowhead East and Growth Alberta will participate in a round-table discussion about what works and what doesn’t, as far as operating a business and retaining employees.

Dr. Klay Dyer, a facilitator contracted through NorQuest College, will be speaking on a variety of different workshops he offers, including those on business and workplace innovation and finding funding.

According to Tuts, those who attend will vote on which of Dyer’s workshops is brought to Barrhead Feb. 22.

If I was a businessperson in Barrhead, there is a good chance I would be attending the Jan. 25 meeting because I think we can all learn from each other.

What better way than by sharing what works and what doesn’t, especially with people who know what you’re talking about?

If you’re interested in attending, send Tuts an e-mail at [email protected] and let her know.
