International singing group elicits excitement

I like music. A lot. I have hundreds of records, vinyl and otherwise, in a collection that takes up a fair amount of space in my office and my tastes range from classical and jazz to heavy metal and country.

I like music.

A lot.

I have hundreds of records, vinyl and otherwise, in a collection that takes up a fair amount of space in my office and my tastes range from classical and jazz to heavy metal and country.

I’m a really big fan of swing-music too (that’s music from the 30s and 40s for you youngsters and our readers who never saw the 1993 film Swing Kids), so it should come as no surprise that I am a fan of the earlier part of the 20th century music.

While the music they perform is not necessarily the same sort of thing, you can imagine how excited I am by the prospect of Sgt. Wilson’s Army Show coming to Barrhead next week.

The Netherlands-based international group sings old songs by artists such as Doris Day, Glenn Miller and the Andrews Sisters.

In case you haven’t seen the ad in the paper, or the signs being put up all over the county and surrounding areas, I would suggest you do a little bit of YouTube research and discover for yourself what is coming.

This year the group’s paperwork seems to be in order too.

If any of you remember, Sgt. Wilson’s Army Show was scheduled to perform last fall but the production company responsible for organizing their tours (Tourplanner Foundation) said they ran into travel insurance issues and were forced to cancel.

In addition, the show, which is being held at the Senior Drop-In Centre in Barrhead Nov. 21, is a fundraiser to benefit the museum.

Historical Society treasurer Elsie Measures says they’re not getting the grants they used to and every little bit helps.

While I will undoubtedly draw the assignment to photograph the event, even if I wasn’t going in an official capacity I would still purchase a ticket.

History is important to us because it tells the story of where we have been and what we have seen.

I would urge you to pick up a ticket yourself — they are available at the Blue Heron Bowling Alley and cost $20.

I’ve heard a few stories myself about their performance, mostly from uncles and aunts living in Europe, so I’ve always been interested in seeing for myself what the hubbub was about.

Well, it looks like I’ll finally get the chance and I won’t even have to leave the province to do it.

Imagine that.
