“I almost threw this one out because I didn ‘t like it very much, but then it kind of started to grow on me. I painted it when I still had my old dog Bear. She ‘d come with me when I would go painting in the mountains. Bear was a cross between a black lab and a newfie. I ‘d gone to the place where I started painting this and Bear started acting strange — I found out a cougar had killed another dog in the area earlier in the day. To get it painted in this way, I had to crouch under the leaves. I finished it this year. “

Area artist Roberta Peirson is the Barrhead Art Gallery’s artist-of-the-month for September.

Peirson has worked with a variety of mediums over the decades she has been a painter and says there is always time to try something new.

Two of her more recent paintings, “Venice” and “Red Canoe” are on display along with the rest of her works from Sept. 1 to 30.

“It [Red Canoe] is from a long time ago — I’m not sure when I even started it anymore — but it just got finished recently and a lot of my works are like that, pieces that have been in transition for a few years, if not longer,” she said.

Peirson says her paintings originate as photographs.

For example, “Venice” is a snapshot taken while Peirson was on vacation in Italy.

“I’ve been there two or three times and I just love it. The people were so helpful, even with the language and the architecture, the roads, it’s all just so beautiful,” she said, adding if you are stumped for an idea, travel might serve as a muse.

“There are so many neat places to see. I wish I hadn’t started traveling until I retired,” she added.

A reception will be held at the Art Gallery, located at 4814 53 Avenue, in Barrhead, on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
