It was the perfect day to take a stroll at Thunder Lake.

However, for about 65 people who took part in the in third annual Fit For Motion’s Half Marathon, it was a little more than a stroll.

On Saturday, Sept. 10, runners in the Half Marathon had the opportunity to compete in the full-half marathon (21 Kms) or a variation thereof in the team event. Those in the soloists’ categories ran the full distance while those who wanted to run a shorter distance were able to break it up into seven or 14 kilometre legs as part of a team.

Simone Tuininga, race organizer and competitor, said for the most part the event went off without a hitch.

“This is our first year holding it at Thunder Lake and I think it went really well. The weather was perfect. It’s sunny and although it was a bit chilly to start off, it warmed up quickly and never got too hot for the runners,” she said, adding she was worried about the conditions of the course due to all the rain the area has been experiencing. “There were a few spots that were a little soggy, but the trails were not soft.”

Tuininiga added she has talked to a lot of the runners who said they really enjoyed the new course, saying that the fact that it was held on the trails around Thunder Lake added to the challenge.

“Plus it’s just beautiful here. A lot of people I have talked to said how much they enjoyed running on such a scenic course,” she said.
