Embrace your inner Santa Claus

Yes, Virgina there is a Santa Claus. These famous words were first written in the New York Sun in 1897 in response to a young girl, who wrote a letter to the editor asking if there was a Santa Claus.

These famous words were first written in the New York Sun in 1897 in response to a young girl, who wrote a letter to the editor asking if there was a Santa Claus.

We will leave it to our readers to decide if they were right in telling Virginia there was a Santa Claus, however, the one thing we are certain is that there is definitely a Grinch.

No we are not talking about the green fictional character created by Dr. Seuss or someone who doesn’t like the holidays and is a general grump during the entire Christmas season — everyone’s family or workplace includes one of them.

No, we are talking about someone who goes out of their way to literally steal someone’s Christmas.

For the last two years, prior to our Christmas issue, we published stories how a person has done just that. Last year, someone stole a person’s Christmas decorations.

This year, as you read in our front page story, it is how a person or persons went to Misty Ridge Ski Hill and stole three heavy-duty extension cords. The theft contributed, at least in part, to the not-for-profit society’s decision to keep its gates closed for the season.

While it is true they may have made the decision despite the theft, it certainly didn’t help. Without the extension cords Misty Ridge cannot power its snowmaking equipment, which might not have been an option considering the above seasonal temperatures predicted for the immediate future, but it eliminated the option. Because as we all know, long-term weather forecasting is a tricky business. Perhaps the mercury will once again drop below the magic -10 Celsius for a prolonged period allowing Misty Ridge staff to build enough of a snow base that would allow them to open.

While it is true that Christmas often brings out the best in people the sad fact of life is it also brings out the worst.

Just like the Misty Ridge example there are people who take advantage of the season by taking the opportunity to break into vehicles and homes stealing while people are attending a holiday function.

That is just a fact of life. So that is why we must embrace the opportunities, to embrace our inner Santa Claus and take advantage when we can to make the world a better place not only during the holidays, but all-year round.
