Footworks Dance Academy can add another trophy to its collection.
Dancers participated in a festival called ‘Dance Strong’ in St. Albert May 3 - 7 and Mikaela Widdup, one of the dancers involved, says it was a great way to end the season.
“There were over 1,000 entries and our group was one of 12 finalists,” Widdup said, adding while the studio has won the festival three times already, “Dance Strong” was a brand new experience for some of the other members.
Kade Steinbring, a newcomer to Footworks who participated in the festival, said it was fun.
“It was really exciting. I’d never done anything like this before but I would definitely do it again,” Steinbring said.
Owner Irene Widdup agreed.
“I’m pretty excited and proud of the kids. They earned 134 trophies this year, not including solos and duets and $2,200 in scholarship money,” she said.
Mikaela said the winning performance was a musical piece taken from the Disney film “The Lion King” called Be Prepared.
“We had all of the major characters — Scar and the hyenas, and it was set in the film’s elephant graveyard,” she added.
The dance group had been working on the performance since January.
