County incumbents announce their intentions

It is a municipal election year and several County of Barrhead councillors have announced they will be seeking another term.

It is a municipal election year and several County of Barrhead councillors have announced they will be seeking another term.

Doug Drozd, councillor for division 1 and reeve for the county said he will be campaigning to represent his constituents for another four years.

“We have huge amounts of work to do in relation to changes that are being made to the Municipal Government Act,” Drozd said, adding those changes will result in agreements needing to be made with all neighbouring municipalities, including the Town of Barrhead, in an effort to continue the seamless delivery of service.

“As well as those agreements, the work currently underway with [the town] in relation to the Kiel Industrial Park needs to focus on bringing some tangible results to the community and I am committed to getting that done.”

Drozd noted he would inform the newly elected council in October that he intends to put his name forward for the position of reeve.

“I believe that I have provided sound leadership to council and have worked effectively with administration and other governments to do so,” he added.

Coun. Marvin Schatz, elected for his first term to represent division 2 in the last municipal election, said he looks forward to continuing to be a voice for agriculture.

“It is my intention to run for another term as a councillor for the county,” Schatz said, adding his first term was spent learning the ropes of municipal governance.

“Everything that was involved in being a councillor. I was able to take some municipal governance courses to help out with that and now that I have four years of practical experience, I would like the opportunity to serve again.”

Schatz said agriculture is very important to the county and himself.

“The ability for farmers to have roads to get their commodities to market and for some to get people to their yards to sell farm fresh produce and to also be fiscally responsible, is of paramount importance. I have had the opportunity to chair the ag service board and want to continue to see that as a strong part of the county,” he added.

Coun. Ron Kleinfeldt, representative of division 3 and Coun. Darrell Troock, of division 5, are both seeking re-election and agreed with Schatz.

“I believe we have a very good group of councillors who work together well and I have learned a lot this term myself,” Kleinfeldt said, adding he looks forward to continuing to serve his constituents provided they choose to elect him.

“I truly do enjoy the great work the county council has done and the friendships I have created, but it is only if the residents choose me that I will continue to be their representative on council,” Troock said.

Coun. Bill Lee, who stepped down as reeve of the county in late 2016 due to health concerns and assumed the position of deputy reeve after an organizational meeting vote Oct. 18, 2016, has said he will not be running for another term however.

Lee currently represents division 6.

As of press time, Coun. Bill Lane, representative of division 4 had added his name to the list but Coun. Dennis Nanninga, representative of division 7 had not yet confirmed his decision.
