Eight teams competed in a Novice tournament Feb. 3 to 4, hosted by Barrhead, that saw the Bruins beat the Spruce Grove Rebels 5-4 in the final round Sunday afternoon and Bruins coach Alex Luciuk says it couldn’t have gone any better.

“I’m really happy with the way the team played,” Luciuk said, adding the close win was a great way to end the tournament. “It was a long weekend. You’re always learning and it’s nice when it is a tight final game, like ours was, because when the players are nervous and they get pushed and come out of the tournament better players because of it, you can’t ask for better.”

The bruins faced off against the Spruce Grove Rebels on Feb. 3, tying them 5-5 in the first game of the Novice tournament. Following the tie, the Bruins defeated the Westlock Warriors and the Beaumont Bulldogs.

Heading into the final game, the Bruins scored first ten minutes into the first period on a goal from Brady Parsons.

The Rebels rallied and scored one of their own, the Bruins answered back in the second period with goals from Parsons and Conner Kalmbach and in the third, with goals from Kalmbach and Jack Fitzpatrick.

The Rebels scored three more times, one in the second, two in the third, and the game ended 5-4 for Barrhead.
