Provincial playdowns began this week for Barrhead Minor Hockey Association teams and for the Barrhead Bruins, it was a good start.

The Atom 1 team faced off against the Athabasca Atom 1 Hawks Jan. 18 in the first of a two-game, total-points series that ended 11-3 for Barrhead.

In the first period, Bruin’s players Liam Rentz and Tayson Hallock scored one goal each, with assists from Renko Wepener and Brett Visser respectively, while the Hawks scored one of their own.

Heading into the second period, the score 2-1, the Bruins scored four times — three goals from Wepener and one from Cohen Fisher, widening the gap further and bringing the score to 6-1.

In the third period, the Hawks rallied and scored on Bruin’s goaltender William Bain twice, but it was an effort Athabasca could not capitalize on, even when they were on a powerplay.

Bruins players Caden Lane, Renko Wepener, Ryder Sabiston, Rylan O’Brien and Visser scored one goal a piece, on assists from Sabiston, Aaidan Udholm, Visser and Rentz, bringing the tally to 11-3.

Head coach JC Lane said it was a good game.

“We did fairly well. It was a good team game. Athabasca isn’t a very strong team compared to us but there was a lot of effort on their part and for us to win 11-3, obviously we did something right,” he said.

The Bruins and the Hawks face off against each other again tonight in Athabasca.
