The first game of a two-game, total points series between the Peewee Westlock Warriors and the Barrhead Flyers ended in an 11-7 upset for the Warriors at the Barrhead Agrena March 15.
In the first period, Barrhead’s Carter Greilach scored one goal while Westlock responded with six of their own.
In the second period with the score 6-1 for Westlock, the Warriors increased their lead by three.
The 9-1 deficit remained until late in the period when Barrhead rallied behind the combined efforts of Flyers players James Visser and Kayden Rentz, who scored three goals between them.
The score was 9-4 for Westlock.
In the third period, Barrhead did their best and seemed to make a comeback.
Two minutes into the frame, Kolby Miller scored, with an assist from Seth Properzi, and six minutes later, Greilach scored, with an assist from Cohen Dancause, bringing the tally to 9-6.
Rallying behind the effort of his teammates, Miller, utilizing a breakaway, scored Barrhead’s final goal four minutes later.
However, Westlock was not done.
Following Miller’s shot, Warriors player Ryker MacPhereson managed to get one more past Flyers goalie Brady Callihoo and, with less than 20 seconds remaining, the Warriors added one more.
Westlock and Barrhead faced each other in the second game of the series on Sunday, March 19 and the Flyers won 11-5.
