Bantam baseball plays second Barrhead tournament

Barrhead coaches proud despite losses

Jun 26, 2012 06:00 am | Kelly Brooks

Through the sun and the rain, Barrhead bantam baseball players were at it again over the weekend playing in a two day tournament at the field beside the agrena.

The weekend may have begun with clear sunny skies, but victory didn’t seem to be shining on Barrhead as they kicked off the tournament with a tough loss. The Saturday morning game against Stony Plain, which began at 9 a.m, left Barrhead beginning the two-day tournament with a loss of 25-4.

As evening rolled around, players took to the diamond at 6 p.m. to face off against North Peace. With much determination, Barrhead claimed their first victory with a score of 18-12. Unfortunately their time in the winner’s circle would be short-lived, as their first win of the weekend would be their last.

Despite claiming a win their second game, Barrhead ended the tournament with another loss. Braving the rain, the players put up a good fight right up until the end. But, despite their best efforts, the soggy players lost their final game against Westlock 13-11.

Head coach Mark Proft said the last game was a close one. There were a lot of good hits and solid pitches for Barrhead, but a couple bad mistakes really hurt the team.

Although the boys only walked away with one win from their three games, Proft said he and assistant coaches Steve Hunter and Greg Cyre are happy with the team and the weekend overall.

“Everything was well organized and successful,” he said, commenting on the tournament. “We’re really impressed with our boys. They’re doing very well.”

“There was some good ball play all around,” added Hunter. “Lots of people from outside Barrhead coming into town for two weeks in a row now.”

Proft said there has been lots of improvement in their playing over the past year. The team, which Proft said has been wonderfully managed this year by Jody Round, will continue to work on their game skills until the end of their season in August.
