Barrhead hosts PeeWee baseball tournament

The Barrhead PeeWee Yankees played in a hometown tournament this weekend, winning one out of their four games.

The weekend seemed to get off to a good start, as Barrhead took on Stony Plain in their first game Friday night. Barrhead took the win by three runs, ending with a score of 16-13.

Saturday morning Barrhead stepped up to bat against St. Albert, losing their first game of the tournament in a close score of 14-17.

“We lost by three runs, so we had another good game,” said Barrhead coach Rod Callihoo. “We got better, and we felt pretty good about ourselves for that.”

Another loss was in store as the team battled Fort McMurray at the end of the day on Saturday. Although Barrhead was up by four runs part way through the game, Fort McMurray pulled up their socks and came back to win 15-24.

“We were up 11-7 at one point in time, which was a bit of a turnaround,” said Callihoo.

As the team entered their fourth and final game of tournament, Barrhead players gave their best efforts against Leduc. Fortunately the rain held off for the most part, and the game went on with only a few sprinkles here and there.

It was a close one again, but unfortunately for Barrhead players Leduc walked away with the win 7-10.

Despite leaving the diamond with only one win this weekend, Callihoo said overall it was a good weekend for the team.

Going up against the top teams in the North was a good experience, he said, and it gave them an idea of what baseball skills they need to polish up.

“We had some good competition. All the games we played were pretty close,” he said. “We didn’t get a winning record out of it, but it was a good job for the weekend.”
