Successful day in soggy St. Albert

Barrhead athletes win medals and ribbons at highly competitive Zones

The rain pelted down in the morning, but Barrhead junior high students kept their athletic powder dry to put on a good display in St. Albert.

The 25-strong Barrhead Composite High School team faced the familiar challenge of going up against much larger schools.

Nevertheless they came away with honour firmly intact: eight of them emerged from a soggy day at the Zones with either medals or ribbons.

The most successful was Morgan McKain who earned a hat-trick of prizes, winning the 400 metres, coming fourth in the relay and sixth in the shotput.

There were three third-place finishes – Henriette Akkerman (discus), Bryce Marsh (javelin) and Cole Knudsen (high jump).

The Zones came just a week after the Divisionals at BCHS, which saw 75 Barrhead students compete against athletes from R. F. Staples, St. Mary’s, Clyde, Fawcett, Fort Assiniboine and Jarvie.

There were some outstanding performances by the 25 Barrhead students who qualified. Probably the stars were the Grade 7 girls who blew away the opposition in the relay and turned in magnificent individual displays.

At St. Albert last Tuesday the standard of competition was several notches higher.

“Besides the rain in the morning we had a successful day in St. Albert,” said coach Colin Erickson. “We competed against much larger schools from Edmonton and surrounding areas.”

Erickson said prizes were awarded to the top six athletes in each event.
